Asia Art Show 2023 — Incheon, South Korea
In November 2023, my work was presented at Asia Art Show 2023 in Incheon, South Korea.
The exhibition brought together artists from different countries, cultures and visual traditions within one shared space.
Seeing my work in this context made me think about how differently an artwork can be read once it leaves the environment in which it was created.
Colour, gesture and abstraction do not require translation in the conventional sense. Yet they are never entirely universal either. We look through everything we have experienced — our culture, memories, associations and individual ways of seeing.
The same image can therefore become something different for every person standing in front of it.
This is one of the things I value most about international exhibitions.
They remind me that an artist can begin a work with a particular feeling or intention, but cannot determine where that meaning will end.
The artwork begins with the artist.
Its meaning does not.
